The award-winning A138 Chelmer Viaduct is a strategic highway link in Chelmsford which has increased transport capacity and significantly improved journeys for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. Allen Scott undertook the visioning for the new viaduct based on the design principles of the much loved but under-capacity original 1940's bridge. Using a number of architectural visualisations, as shown here, we considered the massing, details and tones our design approach within the context of the highly valued and wide open landscape. In this way the typology, scale and palette of the engineering structure was crafted to flow as a complement to the river and meadow over which it passes.
